American journalist Marc Frank will discuss his forthcoming book on the current crisis in Cuba during a Praxis Peace Institute online event on Friday, Aug. 7.

It will begin at 4 p.m. on Zoom. Frank resides in Cuba, but electrical power is unpredictable there, so the event will be broadcast live from Miami.

Registrations, which cost $21 for the general public and $16 for Praxis members, can be made at praxispeace.org.

Frank has lived in and reported from Cuba, working for Reuters and the Financial Times, for more than 35 years.

His forthcoming book, “Understanding the Cuba Crisis,” explains the incredible staying power of the Cuban revolution, Fidel Castro’s vision and leadership and the current leadership of Miguel Diaz-Canel amid the punishing sanctions Cuba has suffered during the past 60 years. It chronicles recent actions by the Trump administration that have made life much worse for the Cuban people

“That Cuba has not succumbed to the power in the north after decades of interference, sanctions, even attempts on their president’s life is an extraordinary accomplishment—but can it survive Trump?” Georgia Kelly, director of Sonoma-based Praxis Peace Institute, said in a news release. “We will explore the current situation of the people in Cuba, the lack of supplies, frequent power outages, food shortages and coping with increased sanctions as well as a look to the future.”

Frank’s earlier book, “Cuban Revolutions,” is one of the most authoritative sources on historical and contemporary Cuba. He observed the early days of the revolution, fall of the Soviet bloc, great depression of the 1990s, stepping aside of Fidel Castro, reforms devised by Raul Castro, latest developments under the leadership of Diaz-Canel and expansion of sanctions under Trump.

Frank was a lecturer at Praxis Peace Institute conferences in Cuba in 2015 and 2016.
