The Italian Ambassador to Nigeria, Roberto Mengoni, conducted a mission to Benin, finding a stable, well-organized country that has experienced sustained economic growth over the past decade.
During the institutional meetings, the ambassador was able to appreciate the quality of the infrastructure and the commitment of the government led by President Romuald Wadagni to promoting an investment-friendly environment, without neglecting social policies in the areas of basic education, vocational training, and healthcare. It also became clear that the Beninese authorities are committed to strengthening the efficiency of public administration and continuing their efforts to combat corruption.
Accompanied by representatives from SACE, Mengoni met with officials from the Ministries of Economy, Foreign Trade, and Foreign Affairs, as well as from the Benin Investment Promotion Agency (Apex) and the Chamber of Commerce, to explore prospects for economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.
SACE presented a strategy tailored to Benin that includes a 120-million-euro credit line to the government over eight years to support projects involving Italian companies.
The mission included a visit to the Gdiz industrial zone, north of Cotonou, considered one of the country’s main manufacturing hubs. The area is home to modern, technologically advanced companies operating in the textile, cement, and tile sectors, some of which use Italian machinery.
Beninese authorities confirmed their commitment to accelerating the industrialization process by promoting local production of cotton, cashews, marble, and granite to increase the added value of exports.
In light of the meetings held and the development prospects observed, Benin continues to be a destination of growing interest for investments and commercial activities by Italian companies.
