Alice Seeley Harris took her camera to the Congo on her honeymoon in 1898. Her gruesome photograph of severed hands helped to end one of history’s greatest wrongs

Most photography students know the Lewis Hine story: the sociologist-turned-photographer whose images of child labor in American factories helped change the law.

Fewer, however, seem to know that a British missionary from a small Somerset town had already done something similar, and arguably more consequential, several years earlier, using a camera she carried into the Congo Free State on her honeymoon.
