A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck southern Alaska on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026, adding to a series of significant earthquakes that have captured attention around the world in recent months, including powerful events in Venezuela and Colombia.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the Alaska earthquake occurred at 11:17 UTC, approximately 84 kilometers (52 miles) south-southwest of Nikolski in the Aleutian Islands. The earthquake had a depth of about 35 kilometers (22 miles) and was classified as reviewed by USGS seismologists.
The National Tsunami Warning Center reported that there was no tsunami warning, advisory, watch or threat associated with the event.
The earthquake occurred in one of the most seismically active parts of the planet. Alaska records an extraordinary number of earthquakes every year: the Alaska Earthquake Center says its network detects an average of around 50,000 earthquakes annually across the state.
Earthquake in Alaska: Why does it seem like tremors are happening everywhere?
The Alaska earthquake comes at a moment when seismic activity appears unusually prominent in international news.
In June, Venezuela was hit by a powerful seismic sequence, including earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 along the country’s northern coast. The events were felt strongly around Caracas and became one of the region’s major seismic disasters of 2026.
Then, on Aug. 10, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia, with an epicenter near San Jose del Palmar in Choco. The USGS placed the earthquake at a depth of approximately 107 kilometers (66 miles).
The Colombian earthquake was particularly significant because it occurred in a region where the Nazca, South American and Caribbean tectonic plates interact, making northern South America inherently earthquake-prone.
But does the apparent succession of major earthquakes mean the planet has suddenly become more active? Scientists say there is no evidence of a worldwide increase in earthquake activity.
The USGS explains that earthquake numbers naturally fluctuate over time. Periods with more earthquakes can occur by chance and do not necessarily indicate that the Earth’s seismic system has entered a new phase. More importantly, an increase in global earthquake activity does not provide a reliable warning that a larger earthquake is imminent.
Earthquakes are not usually connected across continents
The timing of the Alaska, Colombia and Venezuela earthquakes can make them appear related, but geographic proximity and timing are critical.
Large earthquakes can sometimes trigger other seismic events through changes in stress, particularly within relatively nearby areas. However, the USGS says the Earth’s crust is not rigid enough to efficiently transfer earthquake-generating stress across thousands of miles. An earthquake in Alaska therefore does not normally trigger a major earthquake in Colombia or Venezuela.
Another reason the world may appear to be experiencing more earthquakes is simply better detection.
Modern seismic networks are vastly more sophisticated than they were decades ago. Thousands of instruments continuously monitor the planet, while improvements in communications allow earthquakes to be identified and reported almost immediately. The USGS notes that the growing number of earthquakes appearing in catalogs is partly the result of improved instrumentation, rather than a dramatic increase in earthquakes themselves.
There is also a psychological effect: after a major earthquake, attention naturally turns toward other tremors, making subsequent events more noticeable.
A reminder of how active the planet really is
The numbers are striking. The USGS estimates that approximately 500,000 detectable earthquakes occur worldwide every year, although only around 100,000 are felt by people and roughly 100 cause damage. About 90% occur around the Pacific “Ring of Fire.”
That means the Sept. 3 Alaska earthquake is not evidence that the planet is suddenly “shaking more.” Instead, it is a reminder that Earth is a constantly moving geological system.
For Colombia and Venezuela, the recent earthquakes underscore a different reality: Living in an active seismic region means major earthquakes can occur even after decades of relative calm.
And in Alaska, where tectonic plates meet beneath one of the world’s most active seismic zones, earthquakes are not an anomaly. They are part of the landscape.
The science, for now, offers no evidence of a worldwide earthquake surge — but it does offer a clear warning: Major earthquakes cannot be predicted precisely, making preparedness far more important than trying to predict where the next one will strike.
