Tripoli’s Al-Sarraj Social Council has urged residents of the Al-Sarraj area and all Libyans to join a large-scale protest next Thursday in front of the UNHCR headquarters, accusing the UN refugee agency of fueling illegal immigration and undermining national security.
In a strongly worded statement, the council declared the UNHCR’s presence in Libyan territory “illegitimate and illegal,” describing its complete expulsion from the country as a “national duty.”
“The issue of illegal immigration has spiraled out of control and now threatens the security of our society, the stability of the nation, and the future of our children,” the statement read.
The council emphasized that its demands go beyond the Al-Sarraj area and apply to the entire country, arguing that the migration crisis and its repercussions lie at the root of current societal tensions, suffering, and widespread anxiety.
The planned demonstration follows an earlier protest in which the council gave the UNHCR a ten-day deadline to respond to its demands. With no response received, the council vowed to sustain popular pressure and continue its campaign until concrete action is taken.
