Akhannouch Represents King Mohammed VI at African Union Summit in Luanda

Morocco’s Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch arrived in Luanda on Sunday to represent King Mohammed VI at an extraordinary African Union (AU) summit focused on Africa’s peace and security challenges.

Held today in Angola’s capital, the summit brings together more than a dozen African heads of state and government for talks on how to strengthen the continent’s ability to prevent and resolve conflicts.

The summit places the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) at the center of discussions, with participants set to examine ways to make its mechanisms more effective and operational.

The talks focus on conflict prevention and resolution, as well as on the resources required to support these efforts across the continent.

The meeting also includes discussions on a proposed decision, action plan, and implementation matrix that set out measures for stronger African responses to conflicts.

The session carries the broader objective of advancing the vision of “a peaceful and secure Africa” through stronger continental mechanisms.

The extraordinary summit comes after the AU’s 39th ordinary session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government in February 2026.

At that session, African leaders called for a summit in Luanda dedicated to conflict prevention and resolution, with particular attention to the financing of the continent’s peace and security mechanisms.

The Luanda meeting will conclude with the adoption of a decision, an action plan, and its implementation matrix, providing a framework for the next steps on Africa’s conflict prevention and resolution agenda.
