Akakus and Siemens Complete Sharara Field Power Plant Overhaul

Libya’s Akakus Oil Operations announced that the major overhaul work of its Sharara field power plant has been completed, and the gas turbine of Unit Three is currently being replaced with the serviced gas turbine of Unit One.

Akakus revealed that since 21st May, the turbine Maintenance Team has been working on the major overhaul (Level D) maintenance and refurbishment of the previous turbine engine in the First Gas Turbine Unit at the power plant, in preparation for its installation in Unit Three.

This work is being carried out with the participation of specialists from Siemens, in direct collaboration with the department’s Libyan technicians. It explained that it is standard practice to involve Libyan personnel in all phases of intermediate and major overhauls to enhance their expertise and ensure they are familiar with the details of the work and the sequence of activities. It said this is crucial for future operation and for addressing any malfunctions or technical problems that may arise.

Expertise and professionalism of Libyan technicians
Akakus said the progress of the work demonstrates the high level of expertise and professionalism of Libyan technicians, both with and without foreign expertise.

This is due to the sound planning and continuous coordination between the Maintenance Department of the Operations Division and Siemens, through ongoing technical meetings, both remotely and at the company’s headquarters in Tripoli. This ensures the availability of spare parts and technical support and prevents any unexpected delays or downtime.

Akakus said operational testing of the newly maintained turbine will begin sequentially under the supervision of Siemens specialists to ensure the unit’s readiness and return to service as soon as possible, thus maintaining the stability of the plant’s production capacity.
