Ahly part ways with coach Thorup – Egyptian Football – Sports

The Danish coach, who took charge in October 2025, came under pressure after a string of disappointing results that saw the club miss out on all major titles under his guidance except the Egyptian Super Cup.

The Red Devils finished third in the league and were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League. They also suffered a shock exit from the Egypt Cup in the round of 32.

“Ahly have amicably terminated the contract of first-team coach Jess Thorup,” the club said in a statement.

“The club thanks the coach and his assistants for their efforts with the team during the past period.”

Thorup, who replaced Spanish coach Jose Riveiro, oversaw 36 matches in all competitions, winning 18, drawing nine and losing nine.

The Cairo giants also announced the departures of football director Walid Salah, assistant coach Adel Mostafa and youth teams director Walid Soliman after their contracts expired at the end of the season.

Former Egypt international defender Wael Gomaa has been appointed football director, replacing Salah.

Gomaa previously held the role between July 2014 and August 2015.

He also served as Egypt’s team manager under Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz from September 2021 until April 2022.
