Accusation: Senegal’s World Cup doctor was trained as… a gynecologist

Senegal’s football team doctor lacked the specialized training needed to care for the players during the World Cup, the president of the Senegalese Football Federation said, as the federation assessed the team’s performance as disappointing.

The team doctor was “trained as a gynecologist” and the problem was discovered late. This had raised concerns among the players about the level of medical support they had available, federation head Abdoulaye Fall told a news conference.

“Based on the feedback I got, the players weren’t confident enough about his handling,” Fall said.

The federation requested additional medical expertise to secure the team.

“We had to find convincing expertise so that the players could feel safe, because health comes before everything,” Fall added.

The Senegalese Association of Sports Medicine dismissed the allegations as “baseless and defamatory” in a statement issued after the federation president’s conference.

The statement says that the team doctor, Abderahmane Fediore, has a degree in sports medicine and sports biology from the Faculty of Medicine of the “Cehikh Anta Diop” University.

He previously headed the physiotherapy department at Fann Hospital and has worked as Senegal’s team doctor since 2017. He was at three World Cups and five Africa Cups.
