Abdelrahman Sameh Wins Egypt’s First Gold at Mediterranean Games

Egyptian swimmer Abdelrahman Sameh powered his way to gold in the men’s 50m butterfly and set a new Mediterranean Games record in the process.

The Egyptian star stormed to victory in the men’s 50m butterfly on Saturday evening in Taranto, Italy, touching the wall in 23.18 seconds, a time fast enough to rewrite the Games record books.

Egypt is represented across 23 sports at this year’s Games, including athletics, boxing, fencing, gymnastics, handball, judo, karate, swimming, rowing, sailing, table tennis, volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling.

Sameh’s win comes as Egypt looks to build on its long-standing success at the Mediterranean Games.

The country has accumulated 620 medals throughout the history of the competition, including 156 gold, 209 silver and 255 bronze medals.
