A Salute to Our African Nations

This article continues our salute to the independence anniversary of African nations, acknowledging our respect and appreciation of our brothers and sisters among us as we work together to build better lives.

Benin, formerly known as Dahomey, was colonized by France in 1894 after the Franco-Dahomean Wars and became part of French West Africa. After World War II, growing nationalist movements and French political reforms gave Dahomey greater self-government. The 1956 Loi Cadre (Framework Law) expanded local autonomy, and in 1958 Dahomey became an autonomous republic within the French Community. On August 1, 1960, Dahomey gained full independence from France, with Hubert Maga becoming its first president. In 1975, the country was renamed the Republic of Benin to reflect an identity beyond colonization.

Niger’s Path to Independence August 3, 1960

Before achieving independence on August 3, 1960, Niger was under French colonial rule for nearly four decades. After World War II, growing nationalist movements and political reforms across Africa increased demands for self-government. In December 1958, Niger became a self-governing state within the French Community, and the Republic of Niger was created. Two years later, in 1960, Niger became fully independent from France.
