Since the announcement video posted to Instagram on Monday, the gsport community has been counting down with us, and you are probably wondering what all the fuss is about. Now, it’s time to join the gsport waiting list.
All will be revealed next week Wednesday, 7 October, when a new era begins for the gsport community. Everyone on the waiting list will be the first to hear the news, personally, on the day of the announcement.
Joining this list opens up many avenues for you to not only get closer to gsport but to boost your sporting dreams. We are working on a special project that belongs to all of us, and we want the people who built this community with us to hear about it first.
When we launched 20 years ago, we had no idea we would get this far. But we are here, and we are not done!
gsport went live in 2006 with one purpose: to give South Africa’s sportswomen the visibility they had earned. On 1 August this year, we turned 20. Along the way, the gsport Awards have grown to 21 ceremonies, and the gsport Hall of Fame now counts 21 inductees, with African football trailblazer Portia Modise taking her place this year.

The honour roll of recent years tells its own story. Tatjana Smith, Prudence Sekgodiso and Laura Wolvaardt have each been crowned Athlete of the Year at the gsport Awards in the last three years, and at the 21st gsport Awards in August, Kgothatso Montjane became the first athlete ever to officially open the gsport Awards.
Every one of those moments was shared, celebrated and amplified by you.
The response to our 7 October post on Instagram on Monday proved it. The kitchen talk started almost immediately. “What are you cooking?” asked Potso Aphane, and Akhona Ngcobondwana answered for all of us: “Pots heating up!!” For Prabashnee Naidoo, whose B’volleyd Movement champions volleyball, the post was a celebration of 20 years of gsport and B’volleyd moments.

By Tuesday, the countdown had become a community sport. “How is it not the 7th yet?!” asked Phumeza Langa. Vuyokazi Ncata put it in true Mzansi style: “How many lalaz how many vukaz?” Stephanie Mawdsley of Steph Talks Football had already done the maths: “192 hours and loading…”
The answer is in the date: The announcement lands on Wednesday, 7 October.
gsport founder Kass Naidoo says: “It’s been an incredible few days since we posted about 7 October. It is a special date because we get to reveal what has been 20 years in the making. Finally, it is all coming together, and it’s taken daily action to get here.”
