MTN Nigeria has crossed 100 million subscribers for the first time, becoming the country’s first telecom operator to reach the milestone and further widening its lead over rivals.
The company ended July with 100.86 million subscribers, according to the latest industry data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), up from 98.64 million in June. The addition of more than 2.2 million subscribers was MTN’s strongest monthly growth so far this year and its biggest since November 2024.
The growth gives MTN control of more than half of Nigeria’s mobile market, with a 51.76% share, giving it a scale that could reshape competition as operators vie for the country’s next wave of mobile and digital customers.
“This is the first time a Nigerian telco has crossed the 100-million active-subscriber threshold. None had reached this figure even before the NIN-SIM linkage exercise. MTN’s Nigerian operation now accounts for nearly one-third of its 317.7 million global subscriber base as of June 2026,” said Osita Odafi, a telecom industry expert.
MTN’s growth has accelerated steadily through 2026. The company started the year with about 94.2 million subscribers and added more than 6.6 million lines by July, a 7% increase in seven months. It added an average of roughly 31,000 subscribers a day during the period, underscoring the scale of demand for its network in a market where mobile penetration is already high.
The growth has also widened the gap between MTN and its competitors. Airtel, Nigeria’s second-largest operator, grew its subscriber base by 7.60% in the first seven months of the year. Globacom increased its subscriber base by 5.21%, while T2 Mobile, formerly 9mobile, recorded the fastest growth at 10.99%.
But MTN’s surge appears to be driven by more than routine customer acquisition. Odafi said the increase likely reflects a combination of factors, including,
“New customer acquisition, reactivation of lines that had previously been restricted, subscribers migrating over from competing networks, and MTN’s expanding coverage reaching new areas,” he said.
For MTN, however, the growth still creates a significant commercial opportunity. A larger subscriber base gives the company more customers to sell data and other digital services to, including its fintech offerings. As mobile usage increasingly shifts toward data, the value of the new customers will depend less on the number of SIMs alone and more on how frequently those customers use the network and the services attached to it.
The milestone also comes with challenges. Adding more than two million subscribers in a single month could further pressure network capacity, particularly in densely populated areas. MTN has been increasing its investment in the infrastructure needed to support that growth. In the first half of 2026, the company spent ₦620.5 billion ($449.6 million) on capital expenditure, excluding lease additions, on spectrum, fibre backhaul and other network infrastructure.
