A small majority of Jamaicans, 51%, believe Andrew Holness is leading an extremely corrupt government.
That’s according to the latest Nationwide Bluedot polls, powered by Total Tools.
The poll found that supporters of the Opposition People’s National Party, PNP young people and unaffiliated voters were more likely to view the Holness administration as corrupt.
Ricardo Brooks reports.
With corruption being ranked as the second most important concern for Jamaicans in these polls, it’s perhaps no surprise that a majority of them believe the government is corrupt.
Jamaica ranks 69 out of 180 countries on Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index for 2023.
The country is perceived as one of the most corrupt in the Caribbean.
The Bluedot pollsters asked 1,246 respondents to rate how corrupt they believe they government is, with 0 being not at all corrupt and 10 being extremely corrupt.
Fifty one percent of Jamaicans say they feel the Holness government is extremely corrupt.
Only 10% of respondents say the government is not at all corrupt.
Seventeen percent of respondents rated the government at a 5 on the corruption scale.
The top line figure of 51% is partly being driven by supporters of the Opposition People’s National Party, PNP; 75-percent of whom say they believe the Holness administration is extremely corrupt.
They rated the government between 7 and 10 on the corruption scale.
But the corruption perception cuts across partisan lines.
Fifty seven percent of unaffiliated voters also believe the government is extremely corrupt.
Respondents aged eighteen to twenty four also took a critical view of the government’s handling of the corruption issue.
They also rated the government in the 7 and 10 range, indicating a perception of extreme corruption.
Respondents who identified themselves as supporters of the Jamaica Labour Party, JLP, and older respondents aged over 65-years expressed the least concern about corruption.
Thirty six percent of JLP supporters rated corruption in the government as low, ranking the issue between 1 and 3.
Respondents over 65-years old also rated corruption in the government between 1 and 3.
Alarmingly 24-percent of Labourites thought the government was extremely corrupt, assigning a rank of between 7 and 10.
