The shirt is red with narrow black pinstripes, and the name across the chest is written in gold. It does not belong to a bank or a betting firm. It reads Melanie C, and it sits on the front of the women’s first team kit at the club that started organised football.
Sheffield FC announced on 15 August 2026 that Melanie C, known to a generation as Sporty Spice of the Spice Girls, has become the front-of-shirt sponsor of Sheffield FC Women for the 2026/27 season. The club, founded in 1857 and considered the oldest football club still playing in the world, described the deal as “a historic partnership” and framed it as the start of a new era for its women’s team.
For Melanie Chisholm, this is not a city chosen from a map. Sheffield has been threaded through her career for three decades, from the recording studio to the stadium stage, and she says the pull was personal before it was professional.
“It is an honour to support the Women’s team at Sheffield FC,” Chisholm said. “Sheffield holds such a special place in my heart, having been such a big part of my career over the last 30 years — from writing and recording Say You’ll Be There with the Spice Girls in the city, to our first stadium show at Don Valley, and my first ever solo gig at the iconic Leadmill.”

The team she is backing is not a glamour side. Sheffield FC Women were formed in 2003 and compete in the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands, the fourth tier of the English game. They play their home matches in Dronfield, Derbyshire.
What lifts the deal above a celebrity endorsement is the money. The club has confirmed that every pound raised from sales of the women’s shirt goes directly to the women’s team and to grassroots girls’ football initiatives.

Supporters who buy the adidas kit, retailed at £55 (R1,200) for adults and £40 (R870) for juniors, are not buying merchandise. They are funding a squad and a pathway, and wearing the receipt. Chisholm, who grew up in Liverpool, places the sponsorship inside the wider rise of the women’s game.
“Growing up in Liverpool, football is in my DNA, and to see the incredible growth of the women’s game, from grassroots to the international stage, is so exciting,” she said.
“To now have the opportunity to be part of that journey at the oldest football club in the world makes me incredibly proud.”
Pop Star Melanie C, Shirt Sponsor for Sheffield FC Women’s 1st Team
The context makes the deal more significant than its size. Sportfive’s 2026 State of Play report on women’s football found that across six major markets, only 25 per cent of professional women’s clubs have an independent kit sponsor.
Three in four still have their most visible commercial asset absent or bundled into a men’s package. A fourth-tier club in Derbyshire has secured a standalone front-of-shirt partner while most clubs above it have not.

The timing places the partnership at the centre of the club’s plans. Sheffield FC relaunched its entire kit range with adidas for the new season under a new chairman, and chose the women’s team as the face of that change. The women’s partnership leads the relaunch rather than following it.
Three things separate the Sheffield deal from a vanity placement. The sponsor has a real and documented connection to the place. The route the money takes is published, not implied. And the partnership sits inside a club-wide relaunch rather than beside it.
That is the test worth carrying home. South African women’s football has its own version of the sponsorship gap, and the Hollywoodbets Super League and the Spar Proteas would recognise the numbers in the Sportfive report.

The question the Sheffield deal poses is not whether a South African music figure could put her name on the front of a women’s shirt. It is whether a club could publish exactly where every rand would go, and whether supporters would buy the shirt because of it.
Sheffield FC closed its announcement with four words: music, football, Sheffield, the next generation. The last of those is where the deal will be judged.
“I’m loving the new kit and will be wearing it with pride,” Chisholm said. “I can’t wait to be cheering the team on from the sidelines! Come on, Sheffield!”
Whether she is in Dronfield on a Sunday afternoon this season is the detail worth watching.
