Niger State Unveils Remodelled General Hospital Facilities, Expansion Plan • Channels Television

The Niger State Government has inaugurated newly remodelled facilities at the General Hospital, Minna, as part of activities marking the hospital’s 100th anniversary and reaffirming its commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery across the state.

The newly inaugurated facilities include the male and female medical wards, male and female surgical wards, paediatric surgical ward, paediatric medical ward and the Emergency Paediatric Unit.

The remodeling project, which began during the administration of former Governor Abubakar Bello, was completed under the Governor Umaru Bago-led administration.

Speaking during the inauguration, the wife of the Governor, Fatima Bago, described the project as a significant milestone that represents renewed hope for thousands of residents who deserve access to quality, timely and compassionate healthcare in a safe and dignified environment.

She said the project goes beyond infrastructure, describing it as a celebration of hope, compassion and purposeful leadership.

According to her, every investment in healthcare is an investment in human life, family wellbeing and the future of society.

She commended Governor Umaru Bago for his commitment to transforming the health sector, noting that the renovation of the general hospital reflects his vision of making quality healthcare a priority under the New Niger Agenda.

Commissioner for Secondary and Tertiary Healthcare, Dr. Murtala Bagana, said the remodeling marked the first phase of a comprehensive upgrade that will transform the hospital into a 500-bed referral facility from its current capacity of 368 beds.

He explained that upon completion, the hospital is expected to become the largest referral hospital in North-Central Nigeria, while also serving as a temporary site for a proposed medical school and providing the foundation for the commencement of residency training programmes.

Dr. Bagana disclosed that subsequent phases of the project would include the construction of modern operating theatres, a state-of-the-art accident and emergency complex, expanded outpatient services, renewable energy and waste management systems, advanced diagnostic facilities and additional staff accommodation.

He further revealed that Governor Bago had procured 2,000 high-quality hospital beds and 40 wheelchairs for distribution across the state’s 22 general hospitals.

The commissioner also announced that the state government, in partnership with the Malaria Consortium, would distribute malaria medicines and other essential medical commodities worth over ₦2.5 billion across the 25 local government areas.

Managing Director of the General Hospital, Minna, Dr. Muhammad Isah, expressed appreciation to the governor for what he described as a timely intervention that demonstrates genuine concern for the wellbeing of the people.

Also speaking, Chairman of Chanchaga Local Government Area, Mustapha Alheri, commended Governor Bago’s leadership and his commitment to improving the lives of citizens through people-centred policies.

Established in 1926 during the colonial era as a medical centre for railway workers, General Hospital, Minna, has evolved into a government-owned health institution providing primary, secondary, and specialised healthcare services.
