On Wednesday, July 15, 2026, former Haitian President Michel Martelly, who resides in Miami, arrived in Port-au-Prince from Cap-Haitien aboard a Sunrise Airways flight. He was greeted by fans, supporters, and sympathizers in an atmosphere enlivened by rara bands.
This visit comes as an investigating judge continues his examination of the investigation into the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, killed on July 7, 2021, at his residence. Martelly, who had designated Jovenel Moïse as his successor, is among those summoned by investigating judge Jean Denis Cyprien as witnesses. It should be noted that he has not been charged in this case.
It is unknown how long Martelly will stay in Haiti. Some observers speculate that the former President of Haiti might use this stay to assess the political climate and gauge the support he could garner for a potential presidential candidacy, despite the numerous obstacles he would have to overcome.
Should be noted that Martelly’s former Tèt Kale Party (PHTK) is not among the 316 political parties authorized to field candidates in the upcoming general elections. Martelly nevertheless retains the support of members of the private sector and the Haitian political class.
