Rights group urges credible probe into alleged torture at Garnada Prison

The National Institution for Human Rights has called for a credible investigation into the alleged torture of detainees at Garnada Military Prison, criticizing the lack of progress more than a year and a half after the so-called General Command announced it had opened an inquiry, with no results or accountability made public.

The organization said a military official affiliated with Haftar’s forces announced on 16 January 2025 the formation of an investigative committee following the circulation of social media footage allegedly showing prisoners being tortured inside Garnada Prison, noting that no officials responsible for managing the prison, the accused individuals, or the head of the General Command’s Military Police and Prisons Department have been detained, and no findings have been released.

The organization said the continued absence of results raises serious concerns about the credibility of the investigation, arguing that the announcement appears to have been merely symbolic and unaccompanied by any meaningful or credible judicial action.
