When US President Donald Trump declared an end to the US-Iran ceasefire a few days ago in the Strait of Hormuz, Liberia’s flag was still visibly flying on many of the world’s largest oil tankers.
It has become more visible in the troubled Strait of Hormuz than the flags of the United States, the United Kingdom, or China.
Reasons Foreign Vessels Fly the Liberian Flag
- Liberia has one of the world’s largest open ship registries, despite the country not owning a significant merchant fleet. This generates tremendous revenue for the country.
- Liberia maintains an efficient and strong regulatory framework for ship registration.
- The country also offers reduced port fees, and its registry accounts for about 17% of the world’s shipping fleet.
- Liberia has gained greater international recognition due to the sterling and transparent administration of President Joseph Boakai.
These are among the key reasons why Liberia’s influence in the global shipping industry continues to grow, despite turbulence on the high seas, including the current crisis in the Strait of Hormuz in the Middle East.
