6 Dead, 3 Injured in Tragic Well Accident in Yemen’s Ibb

Six people were killed and three others injured on Friday after suffering suffocation inside a water well in the village of Al-Hijra, Ubaidah district of Yarim, northern Ibb province, central Yemen, in what has been described as one of the most tragic incidents the area has witnessed in recent years.

Local sources reported that the victims inhaled toxic fumes emitted from a water pump generator while it was operating inside a hand-dug well known as “Al-Salbah,” which is approximately 35 meters deep. The poisonous gases quickly deprived them of oxygen, causing loss of consciousness inside the confined space.

According to accounts from residents, the accident began when one person fell unconscious inside the well due to the fumes. Subsequent rescue attempts by others who descended one after another ended in tragedy, as they too succumbed to the same fate, raising the death toll within a short period.

The incident left six villagers dead, while three survivors were rushed to hospital, with some remaining in intensive care due to critical health conditions.

The tragedy has sparked shock and grief across Yarim district, with activists and rights advocates calling for urgent awareness campaigns on the dangers of operating generators and pumps inside wells or enclosed spaces. They stressed the need for strict adherence to safety measures and reliance on professional rescue teams in such emergencies.

Experts warn that toxic gases produced by generators in deep wells rapidly deplete oxygen levels, leaving individuals unable to move or breathe within moments. They cautioned against untrained rescue attempts, which often multiply casualties.

This accident is considered among the worst cases of suffocation inside wells recorded in Ibb province in recent years, underscoring the persistent risks faced by rural communities that continue to rely on hand-dug wells and water pumps without adequate safety precautions.
