Iraq’s Oil Ministry has announced that OPEC has started a phased reinstatement of the country’s pre-conflict production quotas. The ministry indicated that this action would enhance Iraq’s production capabilities and assist in revitalizing its oil industry.

According to a statement published by the state news agency, the ministry expressed that Baghdad endorses a review of OPEC output quotas to more accurately represent the circumstances of member nations, including Iraq’s economic and security challenges. The statement also noted that Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi had not engaged in discussions about Iraq potentially exiting OPEC.

This follows a Thursday report from Reuters that Iraq, OPEC’s second-biggest producer behind Saudi Arabia and a founding member of the group, had contemplated leaving the organization if OPEC did not permit Baghdad to substantially boost its oil output. The country depends on petroleum for most of its revenue, which has diminished since the conflict with Iran effectively blocked shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iraq’s July allocation is set at 4.378 million barrels daily, but actual production remains well below that figure due to the Hormuz disruption. The United Arab Emirates departed from OPEC fewer than two months ago.
