Brazil fans to rally at Waterwall a day before match with Japan

Brazilian fans, flags, and samba rhythms are coming to the Galleria-area’s Waterwall Park Sunday afternoon, ahead of their storied team’s Monday knockout match against Japan in the FIFA World Cup to played at Houston Stadium.

Hundreds of fans are expected around 4 p.m. at Houston’s iconic fountain and park for an afternoon of Batucada, a Brazilian drumming style, according to Movimento Verde Amarelo, one of Brazil’s largest organized supporter groups.

“Having a great party here in Houston prior to the match against Japan is part of our DNA and also how we establish ourselves to give the seleção (national team) energy and inspiration,” said Luiz Vasco, MVA’s founder.

Brazil is a five-time FIFA World Cup champion, the only team to claim that record.

The Monday match-up marks the first game of the single elimination round to hit Houston. Brazil is considered the favorite in its match against Japan.

Brazil entered the 2026 World Cup in an unusual position for the global powerhouse, according to most pundits. A frequent favorite to lift the trophy, Brazil found itself slotted in a tier below the top tournament contenders.

Despite facing off against Morocco – considered Africa’s strongest team – Brazil clinched first place in Group C in the group stage. Japan came out of Group F in second place.

“We are confident that Brazil has improved throughout the first three matches and will be ready to play against Japan,” Vasco said. “Hopefully, we will go all the way to the final.”

Although there will not be an organized march to NRG Stadium on Monday, Movimento Verde Amarelo organizers said they expect fans from around the globe and across Houston to celebrate outside the stadium ahead of the 12 p.m. kickoff.

The current get-in price for the Brazil and Japan matchup is $980, as of 10 a.m. Sunday.
