France opens their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with Senegal in their opening Group I match at MetLife Stadium (New York/New Jersey).
This game will be a remake of one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history. Back in 2002, Senegal defeated reigning world champions France in their first-ever World Cup match.

The opening match in Seoul on May 31, 2002, is still one of the greatest upsets in tournament history. With a 30th-minute goal from the late Papa Bouba Diop, the result derailed the defending champions and launched a Cinderella run for the Lions of Teranga to the quarterfinals.
Didier Deschamps’ team, for one last dance, is among the leading favorites at the tournament after winning the 2018 title and reaching the 2022 World Cup finals.
Senegal enters the tournament with uncertainty surrounding the 2025 AFCON title, which remains under appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) following a disputed abandonment in the final against Morocco.
