8 Armed Men Seize Cargo Ship off Somalia

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported Monday that eight armed men boarded a cargo vessel off the Somali coast and took control of it.

The agency did not disclose the ship’s name, flag, cargo, or the status of its crew, and the vessel’s current destination remains unknown. UKMTO also refrained from officially classifying the incident as piracy or identifying the assailants.

The seizure comes amid a resurgence of maritime attacks in the region. In recent months, Somali waters have witnessed several similar incidents, including the hijacking of a fuel tanker and a cement‑laden vessel in April, as well as the capture of the Asana tanker in the Gulf of Aden in July, which was later moved into Somali waters.

The latest incident underscores renewed concerns over maritime security in one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes, where piracy had sharply declined in the past decade but appears to be resurfacing.
