5.3-magnitude quake strikes Egypt’s Ismailia province

Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported on Monday that a 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck Egypt’s northeastern Ismailia province at 3 a.m. local time (0000GMT), occurring at a shallow depth of 5.47 kilometers (3.4 miles). The tremor registered on monitoring systems across the region and prompted immediate assessments from both Turkish and Egyptian authorities.

The quake was felt across several Egyptian cities including the capital Cairo, according to local media reports, though initial assessments indicated no immediate casualties or structural damage had occurred by early morning.

Cairo activates emergency protocols

The Egyptian Red Crescent said it had received no reports of injuries or material damage in the immediate aftermath, urging residents to steer clear of older buildings or structures showing visible cracks as a safety measure. Officials emphasized that the shallow depth of the tremor increased its perceptibility across the Nile Delta region without necessarily amplifying destructive potential.

Egypt’s Health Ministry activated its nationwide emergency response plan and placed all hospitals on maximum alert to handle any potential developments, according to official statements. The precautionary measures remained in effect as civil defense teams continued structural inspections across Ismailia governorate.
