Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of African Action Congress (AAC), has said the greatest strength of his party and its candidates in the 2027 general elections are the Nigerian people themselves.

Speaking exclusively with Sunday Independent in Lagos before he departed for a tour of the United States of America (USA) and Canada, Sowore, a human rights activist, maintained that Nigerians are now realising that the nation’s ruling class cannot take the country to the promised land.

Sowore, publisher of the popular online medium, Sahara Reporters, stressed that the 2027 general elections will be a contest between the establishment and the people, adding that AAC is firmly on the side of the people.

Sowore stated: “Our greatest strength in 2027 will be Nigerians themselves. Millions of people are discovering that changing the driver while keeping the same broken vehicle will never take Nigeria anywhere.

“This election will be the establishment against the people, and we are firmly on the side of the people.”

He said his agenda for Nigerians is revolutionary justice and equal rights, lamenting that Nigeria is enormously wealthy, yet Nigerians have been deliberately impoverished through corruption, incompetence and an economic system designed to reward a tiny political and business elite.

Sowore said: “We intend to change that fundamentally. We are proposing a ₦500,000 monthly living minimum wage because Nigerian workers cannot continue receiving starvation wages while senators, governors and political appointees consume millions every month.

“We will deliver 24-hour electricity because no serious industrial economy can operate permanently on generators.

“Education will be free and accessible at all levels, and no Nigerian child should be denied education because his or her parents are poor.

“We will embark on the construction of one million public mixed-income homes while reforming tenancy laws so that working people are not forced to pay one or two years of rent in advance. Healthcare must become a right, not a privilege reserved for people who can afford medical tourism.

“We will industrialise Nigeria, massively expand agricultural production and processing, rebuild infrastructure and create dignified employment.

“We will reform policing and security, properly compensate security personnel and deploy modern technology, including drones and advanced intelligence systems, to confront insecurity.

“We will wage an uncompromising war against corruption and recover public resources stolen by political officeholders. Nigeria’s wealth must work for Nigerians.”

He advised Nigerians to stop waiting for politicians to rescue them, adding, “Nigeria will change when Nigerians decide that enough is enough.”

Sowore continued: “Do not allow anyone to tell you that your vote must belong to whoever has the most money, governors or godfathers.

“Ask every candidate what they have fought for. Ask what sacrifices they have made. Ask where they stood when Nigerians were being oppressed. Ask what they believe in.

“Most importantly, do not wait until election day. Organise now. Register. Mobilise your family. Organise your street.

“Organise your workplace. Organise your campus. Organise your community and prepare to protect your vote.”

According to him, the 2027 general elections must not simply be another exercise where Nigerians replace one faction of the ruling class with another.

He stressed that the elections must become a referendum on the entire system that has kept our people poor despite the extraordinary wealth of our country.

“We have tried their system. We have tried their parties. We have tried their godfathers. We have tried their promises. Now it is time to try the Nigerian people.

“AAC represents a government of workers, young people, women, farmers, students, professionals, entrepreneurs, and everyone who has been abandoned by the political establishment.

“This is our country. This is our future. We are not begging anybody to give it back to us. We are taking it back,” he stressed.

According to his media aide, Zainab Sodiq, who spoke through a statement made available to Sunday Independent, “During his North American tour, Sowore will meet Nigerians in the diaspora, supporters, activists and other stakeholders as the AAC intensifies preparations for the 2027 general elections.

“Sowore is expected to return to Nigeria before the end of September to resume an even more rigorous phase of the presidential campaign in person.

“His temporary absence will not slow down the campaign. The #Sowore2027 campaign will continue at full strength across Nigeria.

“Sowore will participate virtually in campaign activities while abroad and will physically attend relevant engagements with Nigerians in the diaspora across North America.

“Sowore’s message remains unchanged. Nigeria needs revolutionary transformation, equal rights and revolutionary justice, not another recycling of the political establishment.”

It would be recalled that the Department of State Service (DSS), which has been prosecuting Sowore on cybercrime charges for using an offensive word against President Bola Tinubu, recently instructed the head of its legal team to ‘suspend’ the trial of the activist to enable him to run his presidential campaign.
