2026 World Cup schedule, scores, live updates: Canada takes on Bosnia, USMNT opens vs. Paraguay in group stage Friday
Canada opens its third World Cup still seeking its first-ever win in the competition. Their two previous times taking part in 1986 and 2022 saw Les Rouges drop all three of their group stage matches.
Now serving as co-hosts for this summer’s edition, Canada kicks off in Toronto facing injury concerns. Captain Alphonso Davies has been dealing with a hamstring issue and will not play until at least their second match. Center back Moïse Bombito is coming back from a broken leg, and he will be available for manager Jesse Marsch.

Bosnia and Herzegovina returns to the World Cup for the first time since 2014 and qualified after knocking out Italy during the UEFA play-offs. Their 40-year-old striker, Edin Džeko, and center back, Sead Kolašinac, were part of that squad 12 years ago in Brazil.
They know they will be in hostile territory facing one of the three co-hosts.
“We are a small country, this is our second ever World Cup and for sure we are sort of an underdog in many of the matches ahead,” said head coach Sergej Barbarez. “But if you look at the previous 20 or so games there were only two teams that were ranked lower than us, and if you know our results, I think that you have to just admire what we’ve managed to achieve.”

If someone can surpass what Sead Kolašinac did to keep Bosnia and Herzegovina’s lead at 1-0, it’ll be otherwordly. It was a minor miracle Kolašinac was able to keep Richie Laryea’s shot out of the net.

A lovely passing interplay by Canada sets up a chance by Richie Laryea, whose shot is cleared off the goal line and off the underside of the crossbar by Sead Kolašinac.
Moments later, a quick counterattack nearly sees Ermedin Demirović beat Maxime Crépeau, but the Canada goalkeeper denies the opportunity.

Medical teams are on to check on B&H goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj and Canada attacker Tani Oluwaseyi, who collided in the 49th minute just outside the Canada box. No DOGSO is called as Vasilj got to the ball first.
Both players are up and the match has resumed.

Canada has 45 minutes to find an answer to Bosnia and Herzegovina to avoid dropping their first match of the World Cup.
No changes made at halftime.

The Bosnians have shown through qualifying and in the first half after they scored that they are comfortable bunkering and letting their opponents dominate possession. Canada had a couple of decent chances in the first half, too. Will they be able to break down Bosnia and Herzegovina in the second half?

Canada continue to push for an equalizer before the half, but their end-product in the final third remains lacking. They have never won a 90-minute match after falling behind under Jesse Marsch. Today would be a good day to break that streak playing in front of the home crowd in Toronton.

Nearing the end of the first half, Canada remains dominant in possession, but Bosnia and Herzegovina remain ahead 1-0. Jesse Marsch’s side could have go up after 16 minutes, but Jonathan David could not get a better shot on goal.
