18 Adamawa people die in Cameroon boat accident

No fewer than 18 Nigerians have died in a boat accident in the Republic of Cameroon.

The boat, said to be travelling from Garoua in Cameroon to Yola in Nigeria, capsized upon encountering a storm late Monday night, our correspondent gathered Tuesday evening.

According to witnesses, the boat, which was carrying more than 50 passengers, was also loaded with rods and other building materials meant for Dasin, a village in Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

The witnesses recounted that the boat was caught in a severe storm around midnight, causing it to overturn.

Initial estimates indicated 30 deaths but local authorities have so far confirmed that about 20 have been confirmed dead.

The dead have been buried in Wuro Bokki, a community in the Fufore Local Government Area, according to sources.
