10-Man U.S. Under-19 Men’s National Team Falls to Mexico, 2-0, in 2026 Concacaf U-20 Men’s Championship Final at Estadio Azteca

MEXICO CITY, Mexico (Aug. 9, 2026) – The U.S. Under-19 Men’s National Team fell short of winning the 2026 CONCACAF U-20 Championship, losing 2-0 to Mexico in the title match after a hard-fought battle and a brave second half effort while playing down a man.

Despite the loss in the final, the USA successfully earned berths to the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup and 2027 Pan American games with the top four teams at the tournament securing their spot in the upcoming competitions.

The rematch of the 2024 tournament final started with a booming roar from the 36,000 fans in attendance at the famed Estadio Azteca, providing a definitive homefield advantage for the host nation and setting the stage for what would be a highly competitive match amongst longstanding rivals.

Both sides had brief spells of possession early in the first half but found limited success in front of the goal. The U.S. continued their excellent team defending and the attack created a few opportunities as both teams settled into the match.

Midway through the first half, Mexico won a foul in the attacking third about 30 yards from goal. The ensuing free kick was taken by Cristian Inda who was a late change to the starting lineup, inserted only a few minutes before kickoff.

Inda delivered service to the far post where Mexican captain Carlos Hernandez was able to head the ball and redirect it to the near post. Cristobal Alfaro was then able to get enough of the ball with his head and chest to guide the ball into the goal. U.S. midfielder Colin Guske and goalkeeper Kayne Rizvanovich appeared to keep the ball out of goal, but VAR confirmed that the entirety of the ball had crossed over the line and that gave the Mexicans the early lead.

Just before the end of the first half, American captain Chris Applewhite was shown a yellow card by referee Adonis Carrasco after a sliding tackle on Hugo Camberos. The play was reviewed by VAR, and after a brief visit to the pitch side monitor, the initial yellow card was rescinded and a red card was shown instead, with the review having determined that Applewhite was the last defender and the foul was a denial of a goal scoring opportunity.

Playing with a man down in the buzz of Azteca Stadium, the U.S. battled through adversity for the entirety of the second half and were able to create turnovers and generated multiple chances to equalize. In the 58th minute, forward Jaidyn Contreras won a one-on-one battle, as he had done all tournament, and sent in a service that forced a scrambling clearance by the Mexican defense. Minutes later, forward Ruben Ramos also came out on top of a duel in the attacking third and set up forward Din Kaplija for a shot that went just above the crossbar.

Mexico capitalized on a corner kick in the 69th minute to double their lead. Inda sent in a service and the strong delivery squeezed through the outstretched hands of Rizanovich. The ball bounced to Alfaro inside the six-yard box, and he once again did just enough to head the ball into the goal.

Despite the runner-up finish, the young Americans gained invaluable experience with an excellent overall performance throughout the 2026 Concacaf U-20 Men’s Championship, allowing just three goals through six matches. This was the USA’s 11th appearance in the final of this tournament and fifth in a row.

The USA have now finished second in two-consecutive Concacaf U-20 tournaments, with the 2024 title going to Mexico after a last-minute stoppage time goal that ended the U.S. streak of three consecutive titlesin 2017, 2018 and 2022.

The tournament also served as the qualifying competition for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. With the USA already in the tournament as hosts, Mexico claimed Concacaf’s other berth.
