The Yoruba Youth Socio-Cultural Association (YYSA), the umbrella body of Yoruba youths, has condemned the call for President Bola Tinubu’s impeachment by a faction of Afenifere led by Oba Oladipo Olaitan, describing the move as “despicable” and “unwarranted.”
In a statement issued on Sunday by its National President, Olalekan Hammed, the group said that President Tinubu did not violate any contract terms or commit any impeachable offence by referring to Mr. Gilbert Chagoury, Chairman of the Chagoury Group, as a partner in the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project.
“It is not unlawful for a president or governor to award contracts to a company owned by a professional with a strong track record of competence and integrity,” Hammed stated.
He pointed to the successful execution of major projects by the Chagoury Group—most notably the Lagos Atlantic City—as proof of the firm’s capacity to deliver on large-scale infrastructure.
“President Tinubu is known for admiring competence and is committed to infrastructural development that can improve the economy and enhance the quality of life for Nigerians,” the YYSA leader added.
Hammed said the allegations made by the Afenifere faction, suggesting a breach of contract or conflict of interest, lacked merit and were politically motivated.
“Awarding a contract to a capable company does not make the president self-serving. Calling for his impeachment simply because he referred to Chagoury as a partner is nothing but a despicable and condemnable act,” the statement read.
YYSA called on Yoruba leaders to speak with one voice in support of national progress rather than resorting to divisive and unfounded allegations.
