Yemen : Sixth Earthquake Recorded in Dhamar

Sana’a — The National Center for Monitoring and Studying Earthquakes and Volcanoes reported a new earthquake in Yemen’s Dhamar Province, south of Sana’a, on Monday, marking the sixth tremor recorded in the area during May.  

According to the center’s seismic bulletin, the quake struck at 5:15 p.m. local time with a magnitude of 3.1 on the Richter scale. It was classified as a light tremor, with no initial reports of damage. 

Geological monitoring stations identified the epicenter northwest of Dhamar at a shallow depth of approximately three kilometers, explaining its mild nature and proximity to the earth’s surface.  

This latest tremor is part of a series of ongoing seismic activity in the province throughout May. Earlier in the month, five other quakes of varying strength were recorded. Two mid-May tremors measured 2.6 and 2.0 in magnitude at depths of around eight kilometers northwest of the province. In the first third of May, three additional quakes were detected, including one at 2.3 magnitude and three kilometers deep, another at 2.0 magnitude, and the strongest at 3.2 magnitude, located seven kilometers northwest of Ma‘bar in Jahra District.  

Dhamar Province is historically known for its seismic and volcanic activity due to its geological composition, dormant volcanic fields, and the presence of natural hot springs.
