Yakani urges South Sudanese to reject hate speech ahead of 2026 elections

Civil society leader Edmund Yakani has called on South Sudanese to refrain from hate speech and inflammatory rhetoric as the country prepares for the planned December 2026 general elections.

Yakani, who heads the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), urged the public and political actors to conduct election-related debates peacefully and responsibly despite differing opinions on the country’s readiness for the polls.

Speaking to Eye Radio this afternoon, Yakani said discussions about the elections should promote tolerance and national unity rather than division and violence.

“There are two different opinions on whether the country is ready to hold the elections scheduled for December 2026. Regardless of those differences, we must refrain from hate speech, hostile propaganda, hate-filled sentiments, incitement, and violence,” he appealed.

Yakani called on political leaders, supporters, civil society organizations, and citizens to exercise restraint and respect differing views throughout the electoral process.

“Debate about the elections should be conducted in a healthy and peaceful manner. We should reject hate speech, avoid hostile propaganda, refrain from spreading hatred, and never incite violence. Elections are highly contested political processes that require a high level of maturity and discipline,” he added.

He said peaceful dialogue, tolerance, and responsible political engagement are essential to ensuring credible, peaceful, and inclusive elections in South Sudan.
