World Cup puts players in shop window as transfer spending soars

The FIFA Men’s World Cup helped drive a record mid-year transfer market, with 267 tournament players changing clubs since June.

FIFA say players from 47 nationalities who appeared at the 2026 tournament have moved during the window, generating more than US$3.3 billion (NZ$5.6 billion) in combined transfer fees.

The figures are included in FIFA’s International Transfer Snapshot, covering international transfer activity between June 1 and September 2, 2026.

FIFA say the tournament provided a global shop window for established players and emerging talent, creating opportunities for moves following their World Cup performances.

A number of All Whites who appeared at the tournament have since started with new clubs, including Elijah Just (26), who joined English Championship club Swansea City from Scottish Premiership side Motherwell.

Just scored three goals at the World Cup, while Motherwell described his subsequent move to Swansea as generating a club-record transfer fee.

Defender Tim Payne (32) made an unusual switch from Wellington Phoenix to Paraguayan champions Club Olimpia after becoming one of the World Cup’s social media stories.

Payne played all three group matches for New Zealand and joined the Asunción-based club after the tournament, with Phoenix receiving an undisclosed transfer fee.

All Whites winger Jesse Randall (24) joined Scottish Premiership club Dundee United after the World Cup, having agreed a two-year deal before the tournament.

Randall left Auckland FC after two seasons, while defender Tyler Bindon (21) subsequently joined Championship club Charlton Athletic on a season-long loan from Nottingham Forest.

Callum McCowatt (27) also changed clubs after representing New Zealand at the tournament, leaving Silkeborg to join Danish champions AGF on a contract running until 2030.

Goalkeeper Alex Paulsen and defender Tyler Bindon remain with their contracted club but have moved on loan deals for the season ahead.

Bournemouth’s Paulsen has been loaned to Motherwell, while Nottingham Forest’s Bindon has joined English Championship side Charlton Athletic.

The wider men’s transfer market reached record levels, with more than US$9.9 billion (NZ$16.8 billion) spent and more than 12,500 international transfers registered.

English clubs led spending at more than US$3 billion (NZ$5.1 billion), followed by Italian clubs at US$1.1 billion (NZ$1.87 billion) and Spanish clubs at US$940 million (NZ$1.6 billion).

French clubs received the most in transfer fees at US$1.7 billion (NZ$2.9 billion), ahead of English clubs at US$1.43 billion (NZ$2.43 billion).

Women’s professional football also set records during the mid-year window, with 1,406 international transfers registered, up 19.2% on the previous high.

Transfer spending more than doubled from the corresponding 2025 window to a record US$28.6 million (NZ$48.6 million).

English clubs spent the most on women’s transfers at US$8 million (NZ$13.6 million), followed by Spanish clubs with US$6.6 million (NZ$11.2 million) and German clubs with US$4.9 million (NZ$8.3 million).

FIFA have made the transfer data available through their interactive platform, allowing comparisons between member associations and previous transfer windows.
