World Cup match-winner Ferran Torres rescues point for PSG on debut

Ferran Torres scored twice on his Paris Saint-Germain debut as the defending Ligue 1 champions were forced to settle for a 2-2 season-opening draw at Rennes on Sunday.

Sebastian Szymanski opened the scoring and Esteban Lepaul doubled Rennes’ advantage before the break.

Luis Enrique introduced Torres to begin the second half, and the man who scored Spain’s World Cup-winning goal last month made his impact felt with a 71st-minute strike, and then nodded the sides level with eight minutes remaining.

The contest was played at Rennes’ Roazhon Park after PSG’s pitch was deemed unplayable due to the extreme heatwaves in Paris, which the club on Wednesday announced had “severely damaged” the playing surface at the Parc des Princes.

Jordan international Musa Al-Taamari looked to get Rennes started early when he sent a shot into the side-netting in the first minute.

Szymanski opened the scoring in the ninth minute, a goal initiated by a fine Lepaul header.

Adrien Thomasson provided the assist, and Rennes were in front after the Poland international pinged his shot off Matvey Safonov’s right post.

Désiré Doué thought he had found an equalizer in the 22nd minute when he chipped Brice Samba, but it was chalked off for offside.

Ousmane Dembélé had a chance from an Achraf Hakimi pass, but it was squandered by the Ballon d’Or winner who hit it over the crossbar.

It was a moment PSG would come to regret when Rennes doubled their lead in the 38th minute.

Al-Taamari battled for the ball in the right corner, cleverly flicking to Przemyslaw Frankowski, who then delivered the cross for Lepaul to slot past Safonov.

João Neves went closer for PSG, forcing Samba to dive to his left for the save, but it remained a two-goal Rennes advantage at half-time.

Torres was introduced to begin the second half, replacing Dembélé, while Mika Godts, who joined the club last week, replaced Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Samba preserved Rennes’ lead with a double-save 10 minutes after the break, first keeping out a Doué effort, then reacting quickly to stoop to his left and keep out Warren Zaire-Emery’s follow-up.

Torres cut the deficit in half with 19 minutes remaining when he latched on to a ball over the top from fellow World Cup winner and substitute Fabian Ruiz and fired into the bottom-right corner.

Doué skied an effort before Torres, again from a Ruiz delivery, glanced a header past Samba with eight minutes remaining to draw the sides level.

Rennes nearly went back in front, but Willian Pacho saved PSG’s point with a goal-line clearance to deny Ludovic Blas a late winner.
