American actress and singer, Selena Gomez, believes women endure greater criticism than men on social media.
Speaking on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, the singer and actress discussed the impact of online negativity alongside her fiancé, songwriter and producer Benny Blanco. The couple, promoting their collaborative album I Said I Love You First, reflected on the pressures of living in the public eye.
Blanco avoids social media comments entirely, describing his approach as “freefalling through life.” But Gomez, 32, finds the experience far more challenging.
“Women have it much harder,” she said, noting that they face intense scrutiny over their appearance. “When I get ready for an event, 90% of the time I just hope to take the picture and sit down. People judge my character, they say I’m not white enough or not Mexican enough.”

Selena Gomez admitted to occasionally reading online remarks about herself, but said they add no value. “Nobody cares about these things when it comes to men,” she said. “Women get judged for everything—from their looks to who they date. We just carry a lot.”
Her weight, she said, remains a frequent topic of discussion. “Everyone has something to say, and it’s really making me sad. Not even sad—because I’m not a victim, everyone. It just feels a bit bitter, and I feel guilty for saying that, but it’s true.”
Gomez has stepped away from social media at times for her mental well-being. “I’m human, so of course I sometimes read things, but most of the time, I ignore them,” she said. She no longer keeps social media apps on her phone but acknowledged their influence. “I understand the power of social media—it’s just tricky.”
