WHO chief: Progress made in containing Ebola outbreak in DR Congo

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Wednesday that progress has been made in containing the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with transmission declining in Ituri Province and no new cases reported in South Kivu since May.

Tedros said more than 1,700 patients have recovered, but the outbreak continues to spread, with over 7,200 cases and 3,500 deaths reported across seven provinces. Ituri recorded nearly 300 new cases and 160 deaths last week, while cases in North Kivu nearly doubled over the past two weeks.

He said vaccine trials are expected to begin in the coming weeks , called on donors to support the government’s response and broader humanitarian efforts.
