Dutch special forces reportedly came close twice in recent weeks to capturing fugitive cocaine boss Jos Leijdekkers off Sierra Leone’s coast. But the bigger question haunting Freetown is how one of Europe’s most wanted men appeared to move so comfortably inside the country, and under whose protection?
The Jos Leijdekkers scandal exploded after photographs and videos allegedly showed the Dutch fugitive – better known as “Bolle Jos” – attending a New Year church service in Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio’s hometown of Tihun, seated just rows away from the president and close to members of the first family.
