WAFCON 2026: South Africa edge Burkina Faso to set up quarterfinal clash against hosts Morocco

South Africa will face Morocco in a blockbuster quarterfinal clash after the former confirmed their slot in the last eight.

The Banyana Banyana earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over Burkina Faso on Tuesday in their final Group B fixture.

Experienced forward Thembi Kgatlana scored the lone goal of the game in the 21st minute to fire South Africa into the quarterfinals.

The win coupled with Tanzania’s 2-1 defeat to Ivory Coast meant, South Africa took second place in Group B on four points.

Banyana Banyana will therefore face Morocco who topped Group A on seven points in a repateat of the 2022 WAFCON final that South Africa won.

It should be noted that the winners of the quarterfinal matches will automatically qualify to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

In the other quarterfinal clash confirmed, Ivory Coast who topped Group B will face Algeria who finished second in Group A.
