Vodacom Business has partnered with the Strategic Water Partners Network (SWPN) to tackle Gauteng’s worsening water security challenges. The collaboration will leverage digital solutions to improve water management and ensure sustainable supply in the region.
A central feature of this initiative is the Digital Water Tower, an innovative platform developed with Mezzanine to support water suppliers, municipalities, and consumers. By integrating geospatial consumption data, network topology maps, and demand reports, the solution aims to cut water losses and optimise supply efficiency.
“Our commitment to digital transformation extends beyond connectivity – we believe in using our technology capabilities to drive sustainable impact,” says Videsha Proothveerajh, Director of Vodacom Business.
“As we commemorate National World Water Week, there is an urgent need to conserve this precious resource, which is essential not only for economic growth but life itself. By working with key stakeholders including the public sector and industry partners, we are addressing current water challenges while laying the foundation for a more resilient future.”
Gauteng’s water crisis is severe, with demand exceeding supply. Nearly 40% of water is lost due to infrastructure failures, theft, and inefficiencies. South Africans also use 64 litres more per day than the global average, worsening shortages expected until 2028, when Phase Two of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (Polihali Dam) is completed.
The Digital Water Tower rollout will occur in two phases:
- Phase One: Consolidate existing data (meter readings, usage reports) to analyse water efficiency.
- Phase Two: Conduct impact assessments, prioritise interventions, and enhance monitoring and revenue solutions.
The platform provides real-time insights, enabling collaboration between citizens, municipalities, and stakeholders for long-term water security.
“At Vodacom, our purpose is to connect everyone to a better future through partnerships that use technology as a force for good,” adds Proothveerajh.
“Integrating smart solutions into water management will help improve efficiency, reduce losses, and ensure reliable water access, providing sustainable benefits for the Gauteng communities we serve.”
In response to the crisis, the Platform for a Water Secure Gauteng (PWSG) was launched in June 2024, uniting government, Rand Water, and private partners. Vodacom Business and SWPN’s partnership supports this effort through digital innovation.
“Collaboration and innovation are essential to tackling South Africa’s water security challenges. Through our partnership with Vodacom Business and Mezzanine, the SWPN is committed to driving smart, data-driven solutions that enhance water efficiency, reduce losses, and support sustainable supply. The Digital Water Tower represents a bold step forward in using technology to secure Gauteng’s water future, benefiting communities, municipalities, and industry alike,” says Alyssa Jooste, SWPN Private Sector Co-Chair and SAB Africa Sustainability Manager: Water Stewardship & Smart Agriculture.
