US Sanctions Congo Ex-President Joseph Kabila for Rebel Ties

The US sanctioned Joseph Kabila, the former president of the Democratic Republic of Congo, for his ties to a rebel group occupying a large part of the country’s mineral-rich east.

The US has been trying to broker a peace deal between Congo and the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels for several years. Kabila has been spending time in the region occupied by the M23 since last year.
