Calabar, Nigeria – The first female president of the Student Union Government (SUG) of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Blessing Alims, has awarded cash of one million naira (₦1,000,000) to Moses Udofia who emerged the overall best-graduating student of the institution.
Alims confirmed this on Sunday in Calabar, noting that Moses Udofia, a student of the Accounting Department, had the highest Cumulative Grade Point Average CGPA of 4.92/5.00.
She hinted that the award, held in commemoration of the 50th anniversary and 37th convocation of the institution, was in line with her administration’s commitment to academic excellence and to encourage other students of the institution to be dedicated and intentional with their studies.
She said, “In line with my administration’s commitment to academic excellence, I have successfully transferred ₦1 million to the Best Graduating Student Moses Udofia from the Accounting Department with a perfect CGPA of 4.92/5.00.”
Adding, “The Cross River State Commissioner of Finance, Dr Michael Odere, has generously contributed ₦500,000 to honour Moses Udofia’s exceptional academic achievements.”
She added that the recognition is not only to celebrate Udofia’s dedication but also aims to motivate him and other students to pursue excellence.
The Awardee, Moses Udofia, while speaking to newsmen, revealed that the award from the SUG is a testament to the fact that academic excellence is still recognised despite the high level of mediocracy that is currently prevailing in the entire landscape of education and the world at large.
He said, “I want to say a big thank you to the SUG President, Comrade Blessing Alims, the school management and every student. I want to also encourage others never to give up on their dreams.”
“This award is a testament that academic excellence can still be recognised and celebrated despite the mediocracy in the education sector. To other students, always be committed to whatever you are doing as if your life depends on it and you will meet success in the end”, he added.
