Leaders from the United Kingdom, Canada, and France have issued a collective warning to Israel, threatening to implement “concrete actions” if it does not cease its renewed military operations in Gaza and lift restrictions on humanitarian aid.
This statement reflects escalating diplomatic pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as concerns mount over the worsening humanitarian crisis in the region.
Following Israel’s recent military escalation, Netanyahu has said that the country will take full control of Gaza, while international experts have raised alarms about a looming famine exacerbated by the blockade of essential supplies since early March.
The joint statement condemned Israel’s denial of humanitarian assistance, labeling it ‘unacceptable ‘ and potentially in violation of international humanitarian law, while also opposing any expansion of settlements in the West Bank and warning of possible targeted sanctions.
In response, Netanyahu criticized the leaders for seemingly rewarding the October 7 Hamas attack, which resulted in significant civilian casualties and hostage situations, and reiterated Israel’s demands for the war’s conclusion, including the release of hostages and Gaza’s demilitarization, asserting that Israel will continue to defend itself until complete victory is achieved.
The joint statement, while affirming Israel’s right to self-defense, described the scale of its current military actions as “wholly disproportionate.”
The leaders emphasized their refusal to remain passive as the Israeli government continues its troubling actions, voicing their support for ceasefire initiatives spearheaded by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt.
“They reaffirmed their dedication to the recognition of a Palestinian state within the framework of a two-state solution.”
In response, Hamas hailed the joint statement as a significant advancement towards upholding international law.
