U.S. Donated Vehicles to Strengthen Senegal’s Border Security

On August 28, Acting Charge d’Affaires Christine Chappell provided remarks at the handover ceremony of high-quality motorcycles and ATVs worth over $325,000 to the Gendarmerie’s Escadrons de Surveillance et l’Intervention to strengthen border security operations.

To High Commander Martin Faye and distinguished guests – bonjour and thank you all for joining us today. 

It is a pleasure to be here and deliver these 12 motorcycles and 4 ATVs procured in the United States.   

The United States and Senegal have long stood together in pursuit of regional stability, counterterrorism, and the safety of our citizens, and these high-tech and high-value vehicles represent a major milestone in our partnership.  

They are part of a 10-year U.S.-funded program to enhance Senegalese border operations and respond to terrorism threats. 

They reflect U.S. confidence in the Gendarmerie’s Escadrons de Surveillance et d’Intervention (ESI) whose professionalism and capability serve as a model of excellence for the region. 

We are proud to work alongside these security professionals as they continue building toward full self-sufficiency. 

These vehicles delivered today will enhance the mobility and operational reach of ESI, particularly in areas where terrain and distance have posed challenges to rapid response.  We see even greater opportunities ahead for joint investment in defense and security technologies. 

As I close, I want to recognize another example of our outstanding security partnership with Senegal’s security forces that is fast approaching – our collaboration together on the Summer Youth Olympics Games.  

 Over the past year, the United States e has delivered specialized training that enhances operational capabilities, strengthens interagency coordination, and ensures event safety and security—all to help the Games take place safely and smoothly. 

Thanks to our security partnership, I am confident that Senegal is well prepared to ensure a successful Olympic event on all fronts.  

 Building on that confidence, I am excited to be in Dakar to witness this historic Youth Olympic Games and to watch thousands of young athletes compete for gold. As the Games quickly approach, I know Senegal is ready to make this a moment the world will remember.  

Of course, when you’re not focused on security, I hope you all get the chance to watch a competition or two during the Olympics! 

To the gendarmerie present today: I commend you for your dedication to protecting Senegal, securing its borders, and helping to build a safer world.
