Dominant Tuks ended Maties’ unbeaten streak, while the Ikeys beat defending Varsity Cup champs Shimlas on the Green Mile on Monday night.
In round 6 action, Tuks shocked Maties at the Danie Craven Stadiium with a brutal performance from their forwards, scoring four tries to Maties’ two, taking a bonus-point 29-19 win back to Pretoria.
The Ikeys claimed a 14-point victory over Shimlas in their final home fixture ahead of the playoffs, while the Eagles soared above UJ and CUT avoided automatic relegation against winless Wits in Bloemfontein.
Maties 19-29 UP-Tuks
Tuks ended Maties perfect start to the 2025 season. A dominant start from the visitors saw tighthead prop Bom Louw cross the whitewash after a driving maul. Maties responded through Joel Leotlela, taking a 9-7 lead into the changerooms.
Tuks were fired up for the second stanza, with loosehead MJ Nel getting in on the action, dotting down after another powerful maul effort. Flanker Abel Pretorius scored Tuks’ third, before hooker Ruan van Blommestein added the fourth.
Maties fought back, with Jean-Marc Trichard getting the hosts’ second try, but it wasn’t enough as Tuks replacement flyhalf JP Wentzel sealed a 29-19 win with a late three-pointer.
Tuks flyhalf Jandre Burger was named the Player that Rocks.
UCT Ikeys 40-26 Shimlas
The UCT Ikeys bounced back from their Cape derby defeat and all but secured their spot in the 2025 Varsity Cup playoffs with a convincing 40-26 win against Shimlas in Cape Town.
Ntokozo Makhaza struck with the boot before Shimlas’ Bradley Giddy was sent to the sin bin. Ikeys capitalised on the man advantage, running in three tries before half time.
Shimlas’ poor discipline was their downfall, losing two more players to the bin before the break. Ikeys boasted a 20-5 lead going into the changerooms.

Asad Moos secured Ikeys’ bonus-point try after the restart. The hosts took their foot off the gas, allowing Shimlas to keep the scoreboard ticking, earning a bonus-point for scoring four tries, but the damage was already done and Ikeys ran out with a 40-26 win.
NWU Eagles 52-7 UJ
The Eagles returned to winning ways with a destructive 52-7 win over UJ in wet and windy conditions on Monday night at the Fanie du Toit Sportsground in Potchefstroom.
The hosts struck early with a try from Tian van Zyl, which was converted by MJ Mostert.
After dominating the first half, the Eagles took a 26-0 lead into the break. A Chyle van Zyl hat-trick, with two from a lineout maul, saw the Eagles score 52 unanswered points.
With little to play for, UJ fought to get on the board, with Jarrad Jordan dotting down to avoid a whitewash and bring the final score to 52-7.
CUT 34-28 WITS
The CUT Ixias ended their three-match losing streak in the 2025 Varsity Cup with a crucial 34-28 bonus-point win victory against winless Wits in Bloemfontein.
The win saw CUT avoid automatic relegation this season, but with one round still to play, a relegation playoff is still on the cards.
Hat-trick hero, hooker Tokelo Ntaopane dotted down after a powerful lineout maul, before the visitors struck back through flanker Joshua van Vreden. Wits doubled their lead through No 8 Christopher Kachungunu. CUT lock duo Kevin Strydom and Asekho Marubelela both crossed the whitewash to give the Ixias a 17-14 lead at the break.
Ntaopane completed his hat-trick in the second half, but Wits stayed in the fight with tighthead prop Sibusiso Shongwe scoring a brace of tries.
The fightback from Wits reduced the deficit to just six points, but was not enough to prevent the loss and avoid automatic relegation to next season’s Varsity Shield.
