The story

For Siphiwe Tshabalala, the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup delivered a special memory that went far beyond the result on the pitch.

While Bafana Bafana’s return to football’s biggest stage ended in disappointment following a 2-0 defeat to Mexico at the Estadio Azteca, the South African football icon experienced a personal highlight he is unlikely to forget anytime soon — finally meeting his football idol, Brazilian legend Ronaldo Nazário.

Tshabalala was in Mexico City as part of SuperSport’s World Cup coverage team, working as a touchline analyst during the tournament opener. Amid the excitement surrounding the global showpiece, the former Kaizer Chiefs star found himself face-to-face with one of the players who inspired him throughout his career.

Speaking to SuperSport presenter Hope Mbhele, Tshabalala reflected on the memorable encounter and revealed that it was not his first opportunity to meet the two-time FIFA World Cup winner.

“On the eve of the Club World Cup final in New York last year, I went to a dinner with other legends, club owners from PSG and Chelsea as well. He [Ronaldo] came through, and I was ‘Ugh, here’s my guy, I’m definitely going to take a picture’, but I got starstruck,” revealed Tshabalala.

Having let the opportunity slip away once before, the Bafana Bafana legend was determined not to make the same mistake again.

His second chance arrived unexpectedly during a live interview with Brazilian media at the World Cup.

“When it happened, I was in the middle of doing an interview with Brazilian media, and it was live, and he just joined in. When he came in, you can see in the video, the smile on his face, he was so happy to see me…” noted Tshabalala.

The heartwarming moment has since become a viral sensation on social media, with football fans around the world celebrating the meeting between two players who have each left their mark on World Cup history.

Adding to the occasion, the widely shared clip shows Tshabalala teaching Ronaldo his iconic 2010 FIFA World Cup celebration — the dance that followed his unforgettable opening goal against Mexico in Johannesburg and became one of the defining images of the tournament.

And while the result at the Estadio Azteca may not have gone Bafana Bafana’s way, Tshabalala walked away with a World Cup memory of his own — finally meeting the player he has long regarded as his GOAT.

His famous goal celebration has received plenty of eyes since Bafana touched down in Mexico, with fans and players alike recreating the dance. Here’s what Shabba had to say about Julián Quiñones doing his celebration after scoring the first goal of this year’s World Cup:
