Trump suggests ‘Trump Strait’ name as Iran war grips vital waterway

WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump suggested changing the name of another major body of water — this time in the Middle East — as tensions with Iran show no sign of easing.

Trump wrote on Truth Social Wednesday that the U.S. now controls the Strait of Hormuz and floated renaming it the “Trump Strait.”

“Like America, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before!” the president wrote.

The war with Iran has made the strait a key front in the conflict. Iran has targeted vessels in and near the waterway, while U.S. forces have escorted commercial ships and blocked Iranian maritime traffic.

The strait connects the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman and is one of the world’s most important energy-shipping routes. Trump has repeatedly asserted that the U.S. controls it, a claim Iran disputes.

The suggestion follows Trump’s move last week to sign an executive order directing the federal government to use “Lake America” for Lake Ontario amid a trade dispute with Canada.

Google announced Saturday that it would begin displaying “Lake America” on Maps for U.S. users.

The Lake Ontario order applies to U.S. federal use, following Trump’s earlier move to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” in government materials. Trump later proclaimed Feb. 9, 2025, the first “Gulf of America Day.”
