After an eight-year absence from football’s biggest stage, Colombia makes its highly anticipated return to the FIFA World Cup on Wednesday, facing tournament debutant Uzbekistan in a Group K clash at the historic Estadio Azteca.

For the Cafeteros, the match marks the beginning of a campaign fueled by redemption following their failure to qualify for the 2022 tournament in Qatar. Head coach Nestor Lorenzo’s squad arrives with hope to reach the latter stages of the tournament thanks to a recent runner-up finish in the Copa América, but they remain cautious against an Uzbek side eager to make history.

“Every tournament and experience is different, but the truth is I want to be a world champion, and hopefully it happens as soon as possible,” Lorenzo said during a pre-match press conference. “We know the country needs a reason to smile, and that’s why we want to play well.”

Veteran Leadership Meets New Firepower

Colombia’s roster blends the storied legacy of its historic 2014 quarterfinal run with potent new talent. James Rodríguez, nearing 35, embarks on what is likely his “last dance” at a World Cup. Lorenzo noted the veteran playmaker is in optimal physical condition, relying on his elite technical skills rather than sheer speed to dictate the game’s tempo.

Rodríguez will be supported by Bayern Munich winger Luis Diaz, who arrives after a stellar 26-goal campaign in Germany, and a solid midfield core. The South Americans bounced back from March friendly losses against France and Croatia with recent, decisive victories over Jordan (2-0) and Costa Rica (3-1), solidifying their form ahead of the tournament.

Uzbekistan’s Historic Debut

Ranked 50th by FIFA, Uzbekistan is stepping onto the World Cup pitch for the first time since gaining independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The White Wolves are led by Italian football legend and 2006 Ballon d’Or winner Fabio Cannavaro, who took the helm in late 2025.

While much of the roster competes in minor leagues, the Asian side boasts significant top-flight talent in Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov and national team captain Eldor Shomurodov, who plays for Turkish club Basaksehir.

Undefeated in their qualifying group behind only Iran, Uzbekistan aims to use its physicality and Cannavaro’s tactical experience to stage an opening-round upset, drawing inspiration from Saudi Arabia’s shock victory over Argentina in 2022.

Colombia’s projected lineup to face Uzbekistan

Colombia (4-2-3-1): Camilo Vargas; Daniel Muñoz, Davinson Sanchez, Jhon Lucumi, Johan Mojica; Jefferson Lerma, Richard Rios; Luis Diaz, Jhon Arias, James Rodriguez, Luis Suarez.
