The Uprising steals the show, wins three awards

Lisabi: The Uprising, a 2024 Nigerian historical drama, has emerged as one of the leading films at the 2025 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA11) and has secured three major wins in the early stages of the ceremony.

The film has already won Best Indigenous Language Film (West Africa), Best Makeup, and Best Art Direction, placing it among the top contenders for the night’s biggest winner.

Directed by Niyi Akinmolayan and produced by Adebimpe Oyebade and Victoria Akujobi, Lisabi: The Uprising is inspired by the 18th-century Lisabi Rebellion.

It follows the story of Lisabi Agbongbo-Akala, a farmer who leads a revolt after the killing of a close friend by the Alaafin of Oyo and his ally. The film is notable for its use of the Yoruba language and its historical context.

The film was nominated in ten categories, including Best Indigenous Language Movie (West Africa), Best Art Direction, Best Sound Design, Best Movie, Best Makeup, Best Costume Design, Best Supporting Actor, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, and Best Lead Actor.

With several categories still to be announced, Lisabi: The Uprising remains one of the most closely watched films of the evening.

Lisabi: The Uprising is competing alongside other major titles such as Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre, Seven Doors, and Farmer’s Bride, among others.

However, it missed out on Best Supporting Actor, where Adedayo Adebowale (Mr Macaroni) was nominated but lost to Gabriel Afolayan, who won for his role in Inside Life.

The film also lost in Best Costume Design, with Christmas in Lagos taking the win in that category.

With additional categories still to be announced, the film remains a strong contender for more accolades as the ceremony progresses. The film may finish as one of the biggest winners of AMVCA11.
