Tanzania’s National Clean Energy Communication Strategy: Paving the Way for a Greener Future

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Hon. Dr. Doto Biteko, will launch the National Clean Cooking Energy Communication Strategy on June 2, 2025. This strategy is a vital tool aimed at ensuring that 80% of Tanzanians utilize clean cooking energy by 2034.

Speaking to journalists in Dar es Salaam, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Engineer Felchesmi Mramba, stated that the launch of the Strategy will coincide with the initiation of a National Campaign to promote and educate the public on the use of clean cooking energy.

Mramba explained that this strategy has been developed by the Ministry of Energy in collaboration with the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), with funding from the European Union (EU). This includes the National Campaign for promoting and educating about the use of ‘clean cooking energy’

He added that the launch will also see the Ministry of Energy receiving two vehicles to facilitate the National Campaign for promoting the use of clean cooking energy, particularly targeting rural communities.

Engineer Mramba noted that the Strategy addresses various issues, including increasing public awareness about the benefits of clean cooking energy for health, the environment, and household economies, encouraging behavioral changes away from the use of unclean cooking energy sources like charcoal and firewood, promoting investment and participation from the private sector in the clean cooking energy market, and creating a policy and regulatory environment that supports access to clean energy for all.

He mentioned that various communication methods will be employed, including national and international media, traditional, religious, and political leaders, the use of social media, and training for government officials and journalists to reach diverse groups of urban and rural citizens, women and youth, health service providers, local government leaders, civil society organizations, and the private sector.

The meeting was also attended by Marc Stalmans, Head of Cooperation for the European Union in Tanzania, and Mr. Immanuel Muro, Senior Financial Expert from UNCDF, who together expressed their support for the government’s efforts in promoting Clean Cooking Energy.
