Tanzania and Canada collaborating to advance the mining sector

The Minister of Minerals, Hon. Anthony Mavunde, met with the Canadian Ambassador to Tanzania, Hon. Emily Burns, in Dodoma to discuss advancements in the ‘mining sector’ of the country. 

Ambassador Burns, who also used the meeting as an opportunity to introduce herself, stated that Canada is ready to collaborate with Tanzania in empowering small-scale miners by enhancing their skills in sustainable mining practices that prioritize environmental conservation.

Also , Ambassador Burns expressed the Canadian government’s willingness to provide tailored training for women and youth through vocational training institutions (VETA) in areas with significant mining activities. 

She also took the opportunity to commend President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration for the substantial reforms in the mining sector, which have led to an increase in the sector’s contribution to the national GDP, projected to reach 10.1% by 2024. 

Minister Mavunde thanked the Canadian government for its commitment to partnering with Tanzania in developing the mining sector, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive research on mineral availability to ensure accurate data on the country’s mineral wealth. 

He also highlighted the significance of empowering women and youth through the Mining for a Brighter Tomorrow (MBT) program, aimed at enhancing their participation in the economy through the mining sector.
